Rachel Adedeji On Her Journey From X Factor To Starring In A New Wave Of Black British Dramas

In the words of Shonda Rhimes, “Dreams do not come true just because you dream them. It’s hard work that makes things happen. It’s hard work that creates change.”

This quote feels remarkably fitting for Adjani Salmon’s groundbreaking series, Dreaming Whilst Black – a testament to hard work and perseverance. Adjani co-wrote the series alongside Ali Hughes and also stars in it as the main protagonist, Kwabena, a creative solution born out of budget constraints. Originally conceived as a web series, Dreaming Whilst Black transformed into a pilot that aired on BBC Three in 2021.

After much anticipation, the Big Deal Films produced pilot was commissioned by the BBC for a full series last year. Big Deal Films and A24 came on board to turn this dream into a reality. Finally, on 24th July, it made its grand debut on BBC iPlayer, captivating audiences with its unapologetic narrative and genuine representation.
